Well, he's also said that he generally thinks movie musicals just do not work. So it's kind of a contradiction. And very few of his shows that have been made into movies, or his friends shows, have been the best they could be.

But again I'm very much not talking about funding a feature film. I'm talking about professionally filming (with 3-6 cameras, over 2 performances already happening) stage productions... like happened with Overtures, Sweeney, Sunday, ITW, Passion, Sweeney in concert twice, Follies in concert, Company 3 times from the 90s-00s, plus the cast album documentary). He's no stranger to stage shows of his being filmed for broadcast or release somewhere (and they've been on VHS and DVD for decades).
And again, I'm not saying he'd hire "people" i said he could hire one person to be the head, who'll then do all the hiring. Actors, for example, who like him are not talented or interested in fundraising or producing etc, have production companies all the time and hire usually 1-3 (maybe 6) people to head/run their "production company" where projects that interest the actor (or Sondheim in this case) -- either for themselves to be involved in as an actor, or to support other work they want made. In this case I'm proposing specifically getting pro-filmings done of a few key stage productions, and also a documentary of the Sondheim Celebration.
Sorry, I think both are not only phenomenal ideas but also very feasible especially if Sondheim were ok laying out the money for them and being ok not having the money returned in profit if that's how it plays out. Again, he has SOOOOOO much money, this would be very possible without him doing almost any work or thinking, or being relied on in anyway except for money and the final "go ahead" type decision.
I also specifically pitched that (if i were him) this would be for productions that happened in the 90s and later (after Sweeney, Pacific, ALNM, Sunday, ITW, and Passion were all filmed from stage for release)... so I'm not even suggesting he'd have thought to do this in the 60s, 70s and 80s or been as able to easily make it happen.

I don't blame him for not making these things happen and being ok paying for them. I am just sad he didn't, and am saying if I were him, knowing now how much money he had (which I think is quite a bit more than many assumed) ... i would have at least laid out for a filming of ONE of the major Follies revivals (Papermill, 2011 Broadway, Encores) -- he's lucky that happened in London a few years ago at long last, but it is definitely not the production I'd have picked to live on forever on film compared to the other 3 I mentioned. And I'd have tried to make it happen for Assassins bway and Encores Whistle too.
I also wonder if anyone else thought to and tried to get a documentary made about the Sondheim Celebration.

Anyway.
