I have always found the omission of these two songs from the Oscars to be baffling, considering how many nominations Cabaret got. At that time, I don't think there was the whole Oscars-speculation mini-industry that we have on the Internet today, and I've never heard an in-depth explanation. The Music Branch voted to nominate the Score Adaptation but not the individual songs, but the songs are of high quality and were nominated by the Globes prior to the Oscars, so it's confusing.
The Globes nominated the first three songs named by Wayman, but not the two mystery tunes. Both obscure songs were co-written by previous Oscar winners, and I wonder whether that may have played a role. |
