| I’m looking forward to seeing reaction to Billy Porter’s take on THE LIFE and I hope it’s good enough to give it a future run. The original cast album has stayed in my rotation for the last 25 years. I saw the Broadway run and that poster was one of my favorites. The show itself wasn’t great, but the music has a lot of numbers I like. “Oldest Profession” and “My Body” are probably the best known - thanks in large part to Lillias White. But even throwaway numbers like “A Lovely Day to be Out of Jail” and “You Can’t Get to Heaven” have popped in my head many times in the last 25 years. Bellamy Young’s songs are fun: “Easy Money” and “People Magazine” and also Sam Harris’ “Mr Greed”. Having said that, there’s also numbers I skip like “My Friend” and “Hey Daddy”. It’s a really mixed bag but the highlights are so good I hope to revisit the show in the future. A staged or semi-staged concert may suit the material well. And hopefully Billy Porter has found a way around both the bad melodrama and head scratchers (“Hookers Ball”). It kind of reminds me of Sweet Charity in the sense that the music is so good but by the end of the show, you wonder why you’ve been watching this mediocre story for three hours. (Lots of other comparisons between the two works as well). So good luck to a new LIFE. |
