| ''The Globes nominated the first three songs named by Wayman, but not the two mystery tunes. Both obscure songs were co-written by previous Oscar winners, and I wonder whether that may have played a role.'' Bingo! I've always suspected the Academy music branch is a clique-y bunch. ''Come Follow, Follow Me'' is by Fred Karlin, a multiple Oscar nominee and one-time winner (for ''For All We Know''), and ''Strange Are the Ways of Love'' is by Paul Francis Webster and Sammy Fain, multiple Oscar nominees and (together) two-time winners (for ''Secret Love'' and ''Love Is a Many Splendored Thing''). And this still goes on: The music branch just gave Diane Warren, the Susan Lucci of the Oscars, her 13th nomination. It's for ''Somehow You Do'' from ''Four Good Days,'' a movie with Glenn Close and Mila Kunis that practically no one saw. It grossed UNDER $1 million worldwide. That's not to say that Warren hasn't written some terrific songs in the past. Among them: ''If I Could Turn Back Time,'' ''Because You Loved Me,'' ''I Don't Want to Miss a Thing,'' etc., but her latest ones, like ''Somehow You Do,'' aren't Oscar-caliber. Listen to the lyrics; it's a collection of well-worn cliches. |
