| Although I think people here are right about the reason putting the actor playing Eddie Ryan above the title in this production, there is precedence. When Mimi Hines replaced Barbra Streisand in the original production, Phil Ford took over as Eddie. Ford was Hines’ husband and performing partner. The two were a popular pair on TV variety shows and talk shows and in summer stock. Phil Ford received third billing — over the the title — after Hines and her Nicky Arnstein, Johnny Desmond. So this isn’t the first time Eddie Ryan was an above the title starring role. |
