| Sonja and Queen (Pamela Isaacs's character) are both in My Body, but not the My Body dance break, which takes place at a slightly different point in the show; you could almost think of it as a "dance reprise." At the Tonys, they inserted the dance break into the middle of the main song for obvious reasons that, I think, paid off, even though it necessitated the odd bit of having White and Isaacs move to the sides of the stage, playing with money. However, in the show, Frenchie (Katy Grenfell's character) sings the opening lines that White performed on the Tonys broadcast. I've always wondered if Grenfell was having vocal problems--she usually has a huge, confident belt, but she sounds somewhat unsure in her "nobody's business" at the end of the song--or if the producers wanted to show off one of their Tony winning stars. While I mostly agree with the original poster that the score has a lot of strong standouts but some true head scratchers (not to mention one too many "my man don't love me" ballads for Queen), I adore "My Friend" and think it's one of musical theatre's most touching platonic love songs. |
