I always assumed it was to showcase Lillias White. Color Purple revival did a similar shakeup for their performance.
Lillias White had quite the summer 1997 with the Tony win and being the lead muse in Hercules. She’s an amazing performer.
My only other random (and in hindsight, slightly disturbing) memory is that Harvey Weinstein supposedly optioned the musical. I think I learned that in a “live chat” with Pamela Isaacs back in the olden days of the internet but maybe it was in an article. I assume the movie development never went anywhere? |
