...are both BRILLIANT in Four Good Days. The movie itself suffers from having a rather mediocre screenplay: it calls to mind not only other recent films about struggles with drug use that pan out to be somewhat middling fare despite featuring topnotch talent (e.g., Ben Is Back, Beautiful Boy), but a plethora of "very special," hot-button issue driven TV movies from the 80s and 90s.
Still, Four Good Days, which is streaming on Hulu, is worth seeing just for Close and Kunis's work. It's definitely the first performance of Kunis's that lives up to the potential she demonstrated in Black Swan. Although it certainly won't ever be listed among Close's greatest performance, she does an excellent job of conveying the maelstrom of emotions--including those that are not so tender--that come with having a loved one who suffers from addition. Despite being so famous for her HUGE performances and BIG choices, both Four Good Days and The Wife showcase how compelling Close is when she does quiet, more internal work. She is a master of nonverbal acting. |
