Just look at the number of shows available to stream. Mid-2020s if see 3 a week. By mid 2021 is about 3 a month. Now it is even hard to find that many without being selective. Some of the local SF theaters that streamed during pandemic like marin and Berkeley rep don’t now. Clyde was only broadway show that did and I don’t think any other show will. I was hoping LCT would for flying over sunset but it didn’t. Play-per-view used to have several a month and I think they had one this year.
I think the cost of doing it wasn’t justified by the number of watchers (a few hundred to maybe a thousand for a hot show—at least ones that I saw that had a counter like zoom) and the lower price point of streaming ($10-25 range) compared to live performances in $50-$150.
I loved watching at home but it’s dead. I saw Dot at nctc last night and it was pretty full—I miss the empty seats that were common and had someone sitting next to me. Luckily the pair next to him didn’t show so he kindly moved over one so we both had more room. A few weeks ago the sf ballet was full and the new seats have lost the big arm rests so they are cramped now—one seat added per row for each section was my guess. I might not renew ballet next year. |
