| What Sondheim shows do we have? We’ve got the Neal Patrick Harris and the Raul Esparza COMPANYs video-recorded, which are both fine, and the superb Pennebaker film of the Original Broadway Cast recording session, which beautifully preserves fabulous performances. We’ve got a movie version of FUNNY THING which is very busy but well-intentioned. One can’t really ask for more than the preservations of the original Broadway cast video-recordings of INTO THE WOODS and SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE. We’ve got a decent PASSION video which I saw once (wasn’t it from PBS in DC with Lupone?) We’ve got the video of the Imelda Staunton FOLLIES. Lots of good stuff there, and there’s a Mike Douglas show on youtube where you can catch glimpses of the impeccable Original cast Doing their sublime big numbers. And there’s wonderful stuff from the Barbara Cook/Lee Remick concert version (or is that completely recorded?). Besides the video that captured the touring SWEENEY TODD with George Hearn and Angela Lansbury, there’s a very exciting almost-fully-staged concert version with Lupone and Hearn. And, besides the spotty A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC movie, I think there’s a video of a Lincoln Center version with Juliet Stevenson and Jeremy Irons. (I saw it live and it was a bit swallowed up in its performance space (where was it done at Lincoln Center?)), so chances are the filmed version is superior to the live one. All in all, Sondheim’s works have been excellently archived, I’d say, without him having had to shell out any dough. Overall, we’ve got a lot more of the stage versions of Sondheim’s stuff than, say, Rogers and Hammerstein (some black and white film of Martin and Pinza from SOUTH PACIFIC), although there are excellent vids of a revival each of CAROUSEL and OKLAHOMA!. And there’s not much more stage-captures of Lerner and Loewe (though you can piece together a lot of MY FAIR LADY from some choice black and white tv clips of Andrews and Harrison and a whole lot of CAMELOT, including Burton’s thrilling soliloquy, from Ed Sullivan specials.). I think Sondheim is extremely well chronicled. |
