I've lived in various suburbs of Chicago all my life. I began going to the theatre on a regular basis in 1989, when I met my partner. He had been an avid theatre-goer for many years. His parents introduced him to live theatre at a very early age. We have always driven into Chicago and parked on the street. To my knowledge, the high-crime areas in Chicago are mostly on the west and south sides and not around the popular theaters.
Of course, recently a young mother and her daughter were killed in the parking lot of a restaurant just a few blocks from a trendy, highly regarded theater, slightly north of the Rogers Park area. They apparently were caught in the crossfire between two rival gangs.
Believe it or not, I began going to downtown Chicago to see movies as early as 1958 (when I was 9), usually with friends, but on occasion by myself. We would take the Burlington RR from the suburb of Brookfield all the way to the end of the line at Union Station and then walk to the downtown movie theaters. That entire route was considered safe enough for kids our age to travel to without any difficulty or danger.
Free parking on the street is a challenge in Chicago today, but doable if you know where the non-metered streets are located. |
