Agreed. The subject matter is gritty and well suited to a dramatic musical, but The Life is not it.
I saw the original production and felt the score did not work well with the subject matter. The whole tone of the show was off to me. It was an uneasy mix that felt like it trivialized serious issues. I suppose one could say the same about Sweet Charity, but The Life is by far the greater offender.
I don't think darkening the show will work. Frankly, I don't have any interest in re-visiting this show in its original or revised form. I'm sure others do. |
