I don't need to say more if you've seen this show. A TV special. Total camp. It's not where you start......

I honestly cannot think of a single example of a director doing a revivial of a work that they mounted originally---whether it be a replica of the original or a reimagining---and it being very good. And I can think of several examples that are not very good. That said, I love Grand Hotel, and Tommy Tune, and I would love to see a revival of Grand Hotel not directed by Tommy Tune. Although I woudn't mind "in the style of" Mr Tune, a la Fosee and the Chicago revivial.

But if Bob Fosse were still alive and in the mental and physical condition to revive his own production of Chicago, which was left criminally in the shadows compared to A Chorus Line that season... and knowing he'd already done this rather successfully with Sweet Charity ... wouldn't you have wanted that instead of someone else doing it in his style? I'd rather see Bob directing with Ann and Gwen executing and tweaking the choreography than Walter Bobbie. My point being... Tommy Tune is still here and could remount his spectacular Grand Hotel. He could have remounted his spectacular Nine too... though I did generally love the revival we got without him. I dunno... I'd love to seeing Tune's production of Grand Hotel or even a really good "inspired by".... but I'd also be curious to see it with entirely fresh eyes. Though if it were being directed and/or choreographed by someone with less style and skill, I don't know if it would be worth doing. I'm not sure that as a musical it's good enough or strong enough to stand up to a lesser staging. Nine is a much stronger musical.

LOL. I didn't say directors haven't directed revivals of shows they directed originally. I said they aren't known for being very good. I am not sure if your post means you think the 1987 revival WAS good. I thought it was generally regarded as a disappointment. It played 261 performances. I can't do a deep dive into the reviews, but did find this from the NY Times: 'This ''Cabaret'' is not, as its heroine Sally Bowles would say, ''perfectly marvelous,'' but it does approach the perfectly mediocre.' As an aside I was taken to see this production on tour, with Grey, as a kid. I knew that was pretty cool, but unfortunately was too young to really appreciate or remember the experience. Another example is the Lapine directed revival of Into the Woods. An epic disappointment compared with his original staging. I think the best revivials come from a fresh set of eyes with an inspired vision.

| I saw it because of Joel Grey and I love the show in general. I don't remember anything about it now. | |
