Lillian Roth in ‘Wholesale’ and Funny Girl
Posted by: raydan 02:46 pm EDT 03/16/22

So I’m watching I’ll Cry Tomorrow (the story of Lillian Roth portrayed by the great Susan Hayward) and I start to do a search for her bio on Google. I was startled to see on Wikipedia:

In 1962, she was featured as Elliott Gould's mother in the Broadway musical I Can Get It for You Wholesale, in which Barbra Streisand made her Broadway debut. Despite the acclaim for Streisand, producer David Merrick realized that Roth's name still sold tickets, and he elevated her to above-title star billing after the show's opening, with Gould, Streisand, and Sheree North listed below. Roth remained with the show for its full run of 301 performances and recorded the cast album for Columbia Records.

She was also featured as Mrs. Brice (mother of Fanny Brice) in the national touring company of Funny Girl in 1964, again getting top billing.

So Roth played Mrs Bogen on Broadway in 1962 then Mrs Brice in the tour of 1964. Is this unusual, a Broadway performer playing two different parts (where aging is not a reason)? Do we know the reason for the change? Incidentally the re-issued cast album on Stage Door records is well worth while with the cast album with cleaned up sound, demo recordings, a Sy Oliver instrumental album and cover recordings (2 CD set)

Roth also played Gert in 70, Girls, 70 in 1971 on Broadway. If my memory is correct, she made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson during the run of Wholesale and, I believe, another one some years later when her performing career had stalled. She had featured roles in a couple of movies before she passed away in 1980.

When she did interviews on TV in the later years of her life, I was struck at the sadness that seemed apparent in her facial expressions. She didn't seem like a happy person.

Her vocals on the Wholesale cast recording are stunning.

I saw Roth in the bus and truck tour of Zindel’s And Miss Reardon Drinks a Little. Estelle Parsons’ title role. The Julie Harris character was played by Gretchen Wyler.

Ms. Roth appears on What's My Line on Jan 27, 1957 (Salvador Dali is also a guest).

Saw Roth perform at the Continental Baths, probably in the early '70s. She did an hilarious imitation of Susan Hayward singing as Lillian Roth in "I'll Cry Tomorrow." Captured all of Hayward's mannerisms and expressions.
