I saw Stavisky a few years ago at Film Forum...and I know the score very well from its inclusion in the Follies in Concert recording and I must say I was very surprised at how ill-suited the score and the film seemed for each other. I am not saying that is Sondheim's fault, I don't know how those things work really. But since in the theatre we know him as so exacting, and so masterful at creating a muscial language that fits the story he is telling, it was just very unexpected. The friend who went with me, who is a film critic, agreed as well.

I still love listening to it and would love a piano reduction of the score...haha...any leads? :-)

I'd also love to hear a recording of The World's Full of Girls, a cut duet from Follies for Ben and Phylis that is used in Stavisky as something called "Operetta". It's one of the few, to my knowledge, cut Sondheim songs that has never been released on a recording.
