LOL. I didn't say directors haven't directed revivals of shows they directed originally. I said they aren't known for being very good. I am not sure if your post means you think the 1987 revival WAS good. I thought it was generally regarded as a disappointment. It played 261 performances. I can't do a deep dive into the reviews, but did find this from the NY Times: 'This ''Cabaret'' is not, as its heroine Sally Bowles would say, ''perfectly marvelous,'' but it does approach the perfectly mediocre.'

As an aside I was taken to see this production on tour, with Grey, as a kid. I knew that was pretty cool, but unfortunately was too young to really appreciate or remember the experience.

Another example is the Lapine directed revival of Into the Woods. An epic disappointment compared with his original staging.

I think the best revivials come from a fresh set of eyes with an inspired vision.

I saw it because of Joel Grey and I love the show in general. I don't remember anything about it now.
