Of course, to Marian's way of thinking, he did give them all something they needed -- pride, anticipation, community spirit, a barbershop quartet (!), etc. and that's all part of this wonderful work, too.
Yes!!!! That's part of the beauty of the show -- that Harold DOES all this good for the town without even realizing it!!!!
