Broadway Songs For A Wedding
Posted by: bythesea2007 09:53 am EDT 03/20/22

A friend's daughter will be getting married and would like Broadway music that is fitting playing while during the ceremony and the cocktail hour. We both went online and found a number of great songs. Just thought there were a lot more we could not come up with. Appreciate any recommendations. Thank you.

I had In Whatever Time We Have from Children of Eden sung at my wedding. (I also came down the aisle to the wedding march from The Sound of Music!) Since then I have discovered Listen To My Heart by David Friedman, which I also think would be lovely.

Mazel tov!

Don't forget the Broadway numbers the Gershwins created, some of the MOST romantic love songs to slow dance to (do people still slow dance?) :)

Someone to Watch Over Me
They Can't Take That Away From Me
Embraceable You
I Got Rhythm
That Certain Feeling
He Loves, She Loves
S'Womderful

Getting married a week from today, so this has been on my mind!

I'm getting married a week from today, so this has been on my mind! Here are some of the songs we're incorporating:

For music played as people gather in their seats:

Prelude 1: "That Would Be Enough" from Hamilton
Prelude 2: "I've Never Been in Love Before" from Guys and Dolls
Prelude 3: "Haled's Song About Love" from The Band's Visit
Prelude 4: "Get Me to the Church on Time" from My Fair Lady

Actual walking down the aisle is non-Broadway, and done to instrumental versions of "Can't Help Falling in Love With You" and "Always With Me" (from the Miyazaki film Spirited Away).

Our Recessional is "Promises" from Hadestown. (Fun fact: My fiancé and I saw Eva Noblezada perform a show last year. Afterwards, we told her about our plan to use "Promises", and she assured us that it was okay, even if things in the actual show go bad).

First dance is to "Rainbow Connection" (from The Muppets). Our last dance is "Seeing You" from Groundhog Day.

Beyond that, here are other songs we have listed for dancing, dinner, etc:

"Helpless"-Hamilton
"Tonight"-West Side Story
"Being Alive"-Company
"Suddenly Seymour"-Little Shop of Horrors
"You Matter to Me"-Waitress
"Wedding Song"-Hadestown
"(You're) Timeless to Me" (Hairspray)
"The Room Where it Happens"-Hamilton (for dancing)
"We Don't Talk About Bruno"-Encanto (for dancing)

At my wedding, my band had great success with Rodgers and Hart's My Funny Valentine. The marriage eventually failed, but the song was romantic and wonderful.

Already mentioned below, Married from Cabaret is perhaps the gold standard—had the privilege of singing that to my husband in public on one of our anniversaries, with a fellow traveler indulging us with the German reprise.

Make our Garden Grow from Candide is sweet and soaring.

But if it’s a jaunty pair, there’s always Marry Me Now from Will Rogers Follies (“No shy violet/Let’s middle-aisle it.”).

Can’t believe I even care about this thread. For years, I actively avoided anything to do with marriage, because we were excluded. How a word can change.

I sang the With You/Gifts of Love medley that Marin Mazzie sings on the The Stephen Schwartz Album and it went over very well.

“Married” from CABARET

(How the world can change, it can change like that, due to one little word, “married”)

I'm sure there are many, many, but my daughter had live instrumental only, and included:

Falling Slowly
One Hand, One Heart
Little White House/Who Could be Blue
Unexpressed (by John Bucchino - not really "Broadway" but related)

For the great suggestions. "What Kind of Fool..." was amusing as was "Send in the Clowns" Thankfully, others took it seriously. Thanks again!

Did no one suggest Song on the Sand? (La Cage Aux Folles) or Sunrise Sunset (Fiddler on the Roof?) Maybe I missed that post.
