..."And Just Like That" – which was only officially renewed today, even though it was common knowledge they were planning to bring it back for another season before it even premiered –
"The Gilded Age" was all but guaranteed a renewal, and most people who worked on it either knew or suspected it was coming before the first episode even aired. (Christine Baranski said in a podcast interview that was recorded after the first season wrapped but before it aired, "I just can't wait to do more", to which Julian Fellowes, stifling a laugh, replied "Let's not get ahead of ourselves".)

It's one of the more expensive series ever, almost certainly second to only Game of Thrones in HBO history, so pricey that they still haven't released figures on just how much it cost (a price tag only exacerbated by shutting down production in March 2020 right as they were about to begin filming and keeping the cast on hold for an entire year before finally beginning filming in Feburary 2021). There was almost no way it wasn't coming back, unless both critics and audiences had hated it.

So if you don't love the show, call it the fallacy of sunk costs, and if you do, then you can probably already safely start looking forward to the renewal for Season 3. (My guess is that, similar to Downton, it winds up at 4 or 5 seasons total.) And what a good month for Cynthia Nixon, assuming that she likes being in business with HBO.
