Two not that often discussed (in recent years) wonderful Oscar-winning performances whose films were later made into musicals

As it's TCM's 31 Days of Oscars time, just re-watched last night Robert Donat's absolutely wonderful and quite heartbreaking performance as Mr. Chips in "Goodbye, Mr. Chips", which was later made into a movie musical of the same name with Peter O'Toole (very good indeed). Donat won in 1939, considered the greatest year of films with many classic films that year, including "Gone with the Wind", "Wuthering Heights", "The Wizard of Oz", etc. Not as many people are as aware of Donat's career, since he had recurrent health problems, which sometimes forced him to back out of projects. Perhaps his other most famous film is Alfred Hitchcock's "The 39 Steps", which of course has been made into a play which was done in NY with success in more recent years.

This time of year also brought to mind, though I might have missed it this year's go-round, James Dunn's superb (supporting, but really an important role in the film) Oscar-winning turn as the loving, supportive father/alcoholic singing waiter in "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn", later made into a Broadway musical with the supporting role of the aunt made into a star part for Shirley Booth. Dunn, who Shirley Temple said she had a crush on when she had earlier played opposite him in one or more of her films, is so moving and like Donat's quite heartbreaking and memorable in his performance as a struggling performer who still inspires his children in spite of bad fortune.
