You've named two of my favorite films ever with two of the most moving performances I've ever seen (and O'Toole was wonderful, as well)! I remember reading "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" when I was in middle school--of course, it follows Francie through early adulthood, but the heart of it is the portion covered in the film. I begin to well-up when we get near the graduation scene--and Joan Blondell was never better. She should have gotten an Oscar, too--I suppose her role was too small (comparatively) to be placed in Leading, and maybe Blondell too big a star to place in Supporting (back then, anyway). I've never gotten through the TV remake--Kazan's is too indelible for me. Would love to have seen Shirley Booth in the musical--I gathered she threw off the balance of the story in some ways. Blondell and Dunn were perfection and I think it may also be McGuire's finest performance. And it is held together by Garner's performance--one of the best ever given by a child.

I also love Chips--Donat playing Chips falling in love and Chips in his kindly dotage--"I thought I heard you say it was a pity...pity I never had any children. But you're wrong. I have. Thousands of them. Thousands of them,...and all boys." A more innocent age. And Greer Garson at her most appealing (before she became "Greer Garson," though I always liked her.)
