… and now that you mention it, I remember hearing similar things about the show resuming its filming earlier than I’d indicated.

Honestly I grabbed my info from Wikipedia, where the text reads, “Following the move to HBO, the series was expected to begin filming in March 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic delayed production. Filming of the series began in Newport, Rhode Island in February 2021, at the mansions Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, and The Breakers.”
They could be right after all, but more likely I should’ve taken Wiki with a huge grain of salt. So thanks for the reality check.

(Either way, they likely didn’t have to pay the actors too much extra for the downtime… but whether for things such as rentals for pre-existing properties like the ones mentioned above, or maintenance for the set pieces that were built on sound stages – to say nothing of PPE, or testing, or a Covid compliance officer – almost every aspect of that shutdown, whether it lasted 3 months or 10 months, had to have added a pretty penny, and with no work getting accomplished in the meanwhile. But then that’s true of everything that had to take a pause in 2020. My understanding is that by TV standards, and as a sumptuous period piece, it just cost “Gilded Age” a little bit more.)
