I'm curious where you're getting the idea that this is one of the most expensive series ever made... second only to Game of Thrones (in HBO history)... I mean, maybe for HBO... but what about Rome or Westworld! But despite the expense of the period, it seems rather contained. It also is not by any stretch worth being SOOOO expensive if this is true. It's an enjoyable show, though not especially great or exciting or even fun...

Game of Thrones looks like it would require 50x the budget to pull off than The Gilded Age.

And this is certainly not the first show to have beautiful period costumes and sets and a big cast. But the cast doesn't have any big-salary stars (except maybe Baranski and Nixon, but I don't know if they come anywhere near what stars of huge hit shows get), but also so many of the big cast are underused and not in many scenes, you'd almost think they were trying to make sure to only pay them for as few days as they could get away with.

It would be hard to imagine how or why this show costs more than The Great or Bridgerton...
If it does, wow.
