That was a photo of Tam Mutu, who originated the role of the Duke of Monroth. He, too, was scheduled to depart ''Moulin Rouge!'' on May 8.

However, he had to leave the show earlier that week, after May 3, due to COVID, and shared the sad news on his Twitter account.

At the May 8th curtain call, Eric Anderson, who played Zidler, held up his cellphone with Mutu on the other end, so Mutu could address the fans.

On his Twitter Sunday, Mutu wrote: ''Thanks for all the love today. Am truly gutted not to be finishing the week. I am very grateful to all the people at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. An amazing bunch. Love to you all.''
