|That's possible since my DVR records all of the Great Performances, American Masters, and Live from Lincoln Center broadcasts off of PBS. Nevertheless, I do not recall ever watching a 3-hour PBS broadcast of any kind on WTTW channel 11 in Chicago that did not include multiple interruptions for pledge drives and other stuff. I did watch the South Pacific broadcast in August, 2010. Do you or Ann or Alan Scott remember the exact date? Was it the last performance of the run, Aug. 22nd?
Anyway, if my memory is correct, Szot and O'Hara were back in the cast for the last few weeks of the run, but for some reason Morrison did not return. Samonsky's performance on the live broadcast was very bizarre, full of exaggerated bravado and weird swaggering all over the stage -- it came across as phony. I remember distinctly getting a phone call (probably at a pledge break) from my partner saying "What does this guy think he's doing?"
Samonsky's performance on the live broadcast lacked the subtlety and the sincerity I found in Morrison's portrayal, when I attended the show at the Beaumont in the spring of 2008. Samonsky took a lot of heat on ATC on that single occasion. I don't recall any significant criticism for his portrayal when he took over the role on Jan. 06, 2009 and during the months he was with the show, which IBDB lists as - ?.
