Matilda's sound problem is largely that the opening number has multiple children singing complicated lyrics in polyphonic harmony - Minchin normally writes cabaret songs for a single voice (himself) and is very capable of making himself understood in them, it's when he's writing for larger ensembles, and in children's voices that he runs into legibility problems. |
