I am a big fan of Martin McDonagh"s work and I ultimately enjoyed this work, but I would have enjoyed it much more had I been able to understand what was being said during the first act. The northern accents were simply not understandable to this ear....and I was not alone. We had house seats for Hangmen and when the lights came up at intermission, I heard people complaining all around me that the could not understand the dialogue. Several people fled the theatre. Strangely, the second act was much easier to understand. Either I adapted or word got backstage. Why on Earth they don't use surtitles for plays with heavy accents is beyond me. Audiences would be much happier and more tickets would be sold. If it doesn't hold on until June 18, this may be one of the reasons.
