I mean... i won't disagree that Sunday is a musical on a much higher level of writing.
But it being a mess, or even messy (which is more how I'd describe it), doesn't make it an outlier. Rent is messy, and it won also. It wouldn't hold up against Sunday.
Frankly, very few of the Pulitzer winning musicals would hold up against Sunday.
Also, many many musicals that are either on an exceptionally high level of writing, and/or are messy but brilliant (and some more brilliant and less messy than A Strange Loop) have not won -- like Caroline or Change primarily, Assassins, Floyd Collins, The Wild Party (LaChiusa), Follies, Gypsy, Falsettos, to name some). And at least one show I think is lesser in quality than ASL have won (Next to Normal).
So I don't think it's worth comparing to Sunday as the barometer for if it's "good enough" to have won. |
