In my humble opinion, I think Mimi sounds a bit tired. I believe it was the first time she played Molly Brown, and there was only one week of rehearsal before a two-week run of the show. The recording was captured on closing night, and she had been performing in a tent with no air conditioning. Outside temperatures in Milwaukee that week reached from the mid- to upper-80s. There was no rain during those two weeks, and I suspect the dry air made singing (and belting) difficult. Online reports say it reached 90 on the day after the show closed. It was not easy for anyone to perform a demanding role under those conditions. I do like a lot of Mimi's phrasing in "I Ain't Down Yet," especially during the phrase "and you meet anyone, you'll know it's me." |
