The selection of songs used in MJ was well chosen, if that's what you are asking. They are memorable songs.
The big problem with the show is that the book just skims the surface of who Michael Jackson was. There is a hell of a lot of book to get through in act one especially. We don't really get to know Michael. Much of the dialogue his character is given is banal.
Nottage shows us that Michael was both physically and emotionally abused by his father at a very young age. His mother is present, but seems ineffectual. His brothers don't have his talent so they are just riding his coattails. All of this could have been developed into a fine libretto. Unfortunately Nottage stops considerably short of doing it.
