Nope.
Sondheim and Lapine have discussed this. They weren't writing allegory, whether it be AIDS or any other comparable disaster. They were just writing the story at hand. Obviously the show could "stand" for any number of those kind of scenarios, but that's something we as an audience can take from it ourselves, rather than something the authors were intending to put into it. |
