That line by the Witch is also a clear reflection of her own changed experience - in Act I, "of course" she can bring the dead cow back to life. But in Act II, without her magical powers, she understands that "when you're dead, you're dead." (That change is also evident when Jack askes the Baker, "can no one bring her back?" after his mother has died. After all, Milky White did come back to life.) |
