I was at yesterday’s matinee, too. The show is quirky, darkly funny with a subdued melancholy tone that becomes more prominent in the second, shorter act. I was disappointed that Caissie Levy was still out, but as you wrote, her understudy was perfectly fine. In fact, the cast was uniformly excellent. Some scenes had me laughing out loud, especially those involving Ashley Blanchet and Darren Goldstein—the latter giving a deliciously over the top Rodney Dangerfield-esque performance.
Sarah Silverman was present, chatting warmly with two people who appeared to be close friends or family. During intermission I told her how much I enjoyed the musical. I hope it has a life after this run.
