Foster spent the last four years of his life in New York City and died almost penniless of a (possibly self-inflicted) knife wound in his hotel on the Bowery, the eastern border of the Five Points. 'Milton Moore,' as he disguises himself in Paradise Square, was one of Foster's pseudonyms.
