Why not? I'm all for the best actors playing whatever role, assuming that the cast is truly multi-ethnic, not as an excuse to fill the stage with white actors.
August Wilson's work is about the Black experience, but, in 100 years, it will be seen as the American experience. Everything should be multi-ethnic.
Before you start spewing examples, let me do it for you: Flower Drum Song, The King and I, Fiddler on the Roof, Otello, West Side Story, Porgy and Bess, even Good Times (the Musical)--and you know that's coming...
The audience has an imagination too. Historically, we were just fine with whites playing non-white roles. We'll all be fine with any ethnicity playing any other ethnicity.
In the end, theatre is about the human experience. |
