I thought his stagings of Spring Awakening and Once on this Island ripped apart two musicals that were very much a part of the popular cannon and (in my opinion) vastly improved on the material in new, exciting, and unexpected ways. I have great memories of the music and performances (especially Carolee Carmello) in the original Parade, but I felt—and it seemed fairly unanimous—that it was not Hal Prince's best work and the emotional impact of the story got lost in (again, my recollection here) unwieldy crowd scenes and kind of muddy staging trying to fill the Beaumont. The score is one of my favorites and I think Jason Robert Brown's best work, so I would love to see a visionary director like Michael Arden have a go at it in a full production. It sounds like he has some exciting ideas for this concert staging, which makes me believe he could really create an impactful production if given the chance.
