The Nominating Committee

It's worth mentioning that the Drama Desk nominating committee, like all nominating committees, changes over time. But there have been two more sizable shifts in recent history. You could track this by reviewing past press releases (which list the make-up of the committee).

I believe starting with the 2015-16 season (or perhaps even the previous season) the make-up of the nominating committee (and eventually the membership) changed significantly. So the committee who showered 9 to 5 and A Catered Affair with nominations was markedly different than the committee that has existed in the past few years.

And then the committee changed significantly again between the start of the pandemic and now - the Committee who produced these current nominations is very different from the previous one (the Committee who handled the aborted 2019-2020 season, the one that included the recent West Side Story).

We tend to think of these committees as fairly consistent over time, and maybe they are for the most part. But sometimes there are shake-ups, in an attempt to "fix" something or just to inject new blood. I have my own thoughts about this most recent shift (and about the nominations it led to) but I'll leave it at that.
