It’s been ages since I read the play, and many years since that production, so I don’t know what changes you’re referring to. But when I think of the end of that play, I think of Linda Lavin.

Being taken down the stairs, her jaw was fixed in the fully open position the entire way, in just a mask of horror. Such a big, risky choice, and it sent absolute chills down my body—then and again in memory now.

I went to the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam (a terribly moving experience) many years after that production, and it was Linda Lavin’s character I imagined on those stairs.
