And it seems a perfectly reasonable topic for a theater board. Absences on B'way have always been discussed (see Barbara Harris, the Apple Tree, for a date stamp on the subject). I agree that 8 performances a week for a new artist may be taxing. It's a brutal schedule for even the most experienced, requiring a monk-like existence to protect body and voice. The tales of personal sacrifices made to serve an open-ended run have always been part of our understanding of the necessary discipline. We can hope this new performer finds self care to sustain. Sometimes, actors fall apart right after opening, once AEA allowed rehearsals on preview days are over, etc. I've had friends talk about that post-opening cold that moves through a company. We wish Mr. Spivey the best, and hope the bumps in the road smooth out for him.
