PLAZA SUITE - Michael McGrath in today - Whatever happened to pacing?
Posted by: Genealley 01:50 am EDT 05/23/22

Remember when well-written comedies were delivered in a well-paced speaking pattern that enhanced the comedy and moved the show along briskly? No such luck at Plaza Suite. This creaky, long, chestnut lumbers along and, as someone said, you just wanted to rip that door down and get that daughter out of that bathroom and down to her wedding and end it all.

McGrath is a comic pro, but in covering a sick Broderick, he's forced to somewhat mimic Broderick's halting speech pattern. Which doesn't serve this actor at all. Parker is doing strange physical moves perhaps to add something distinctive to her characters. No such luck.

And again, the pacing is too measured and careful (perhaps because McGrath was in).

In all - a bit of a snoozer.
