I wonder whether her late career return to the stage derailed the idea of an honorary award? Just when you thought she would never return to the stage, at the age of 81 she began a remarkable run of roles on Broadway, in the West End and in Australia and won one more competitive Tony for Blithe Spirit (her first for a non-musical).

I would hope that they would offer to have the award presented during the broadcast and not during a commercial. I guess it's unknown if she will be present to accept and make a speech. At 96 I would imagine the stress of making the trip and navigating the ceremony might be a lot for her. I'd be happy with a recorded appearance from her living room in Los Angeles!

This award could have been made forty years ago and it would have been apropos. She is one of the titans of New York Theater.
