I think we have different senses of what Jones contributed. His choreography brought a combination of modern dance and rock concert expression (both on and off-stage) that showed musical theater could definitively move beyond the strictures of representational dance. It’s a template that has been used a lot in the past 15 years since and is becoming a dominant form in rock and hip-hop musical theater.

His work was crucial to what that show was, but the documentary suggests that the production was all Michael Mayer.

Maybe they weren’t able to get him on camera… but to not even mention him? To not show his picture? To not give a glimpse of his work? Maybe in the case of the latter, Jones wouldn’t give his permission, but he should be talked about in a documentary that is going to become the official history of the show’s creation.
