I was in a workshop of it in 2001 with Gavin Creel as Melchior, myself as Moritz, and yes, Lea Michele as Wendla. Gavin and I were 25 and 26 respectively and Lea was only 14. Ken Roberson (Avenue Q) was the choreographer and Michael Mayer was director. Michael McElroy played the Masked Man, a role that ended up being cut. Duncan Sheik was adamant that the songs didn’t sound like musical theater songs. I don’t know if that was accomplished or not. Thoughts? At one point I said “so we’re going back and forth between a story in 19th Century Germany and a rock concert here in the present.” Michael said “write that down.” I saw it at the Atlantic Theater years later and thought the staging by Mayer and Jones was thrilling.
