|SINGER-ACTRESS GAY MARSHALL ENCORES "BACK ON BOOGIE STREET" AT PANGEA MAY 24, 31 AND JUNE 4
ALBUM PROJECT OF ACCLAIMED SHOW JUST WON 2022 BISTRO AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING RECORDING
Pangea, a vital incubator for new work crossing boundaries between theatre and music, is welcoming back the singer-actress Gay Marshall for a three-week major engagement starting Tue May 24. Marshall, reprises her iconoclastic Leonard Cohen tribute, "Back on Boogie Street," the album of which just won a 2022 Bistro Award for Outstanding Recording. Marshall is joined by her collaborators on the recording -- music director Ross Patterson on piano, and Don Falzone on bass.
Show dates are Tuesdays May 24 and 31, and Saturday June 4, all at 7pm. Tickets are $25 www.pangeanyc.com
In "Back on Boogie Street" Marshall, who started her unique career as a Broadway gamine in the original "A Chorus Line," starred Off-Broadway in "Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well in Paris," and even purred as Grizabella in the French production of "Cats," shows off a symbiotic rapport with Cohen, the prophetic rock troubadour and songwriter.
Spanning his first album in 1966 all the way to his last in 2016, Marshall shapes a show full of vivid and personal storytelling of her own experiences spanning the same decades as Cohen's oeuvre. As she did with her previous deep exploration into the persona, artistry and soul of Edith Piaf, Marshall is not afraid to contextualize and inform her subjects and muses with her own insights, stories and elfin charms. In his glowing review of this show, which was first seen at Pangea in 2018, Gerry Geddes of BistroAwards.com called the show "a wonderfully successful tribute (…) I would lay down money that a number of these interpretations will prove to be definitive."
In the last decade, Gay Marshall has emerged as one of New York's most original and sophisticated purveyors of alt-cabaret, merging elements of theatre, musical exploration and nighclub immediacy. For this reason, Pangea is proud to call her a PANGEA SIGNATURE ARTIST.
A near-business fatality of the pandemic, Pangea earned the prestigious Village Award, presented by Village Preservation, in June 2021. Since introducing music and performance in January 2015, Pangea has become a major hub of the burgeoning alt-cabaret movement. Mixing spirited downtown hospitality with a deliciously priced Italian-Mediterranean menu, Pangea "has vaulted to the forefront of the alt-cabaret scene!" according to Elisabeth Vincentelli of The NY Times.
The iconoclastic Gay Marshall trains her bold theatrical-songstress sights on the legendary Leonard Cohen in "Back on Boogie Street," for three nights --Tuesdays May 24 and 31, and Saturday June 4, all at 7pm -- in celebration of her 2022 Bistro Award-winning recording.
For reservations online visit www.pangeanyc.com, or for info call 212/995-0900. Pangea is located at 178 Second Avenue (between 11th & 12th Streets).
