|FWIW, I really enjoyed Patti in the Company NY Phil concert -- as well as her Sondheim 80th birthday tribute performance of Ladies Who Lunch. I recall seeing Sondheim in the audience looking very pleased with that one, in particular. I've yet to see this production of Company and am still hoping to when I next get to NY, but every clip I've seen of her performance of Ladies Who Lunch in this production (whether the West End cast recording, press clips or TV performances like this one), has left me scratching my head. I have a feeling I'm going to end up in the camp that does not see Marianne Elliott's talents extending to musical theatre. She and her direction seem to be the variable in those performances. But, I hope to be wrong. I'll happily eat crow if I fall madly in love with this Company production.
Also, Patti singing full-out like that is really best experienced with an orchestra. With a small trio of musicians it can go from thrilling to strident pretty quickly -- with singer and musical accompaniment completely imbalanced.
Contrast last night's performance with her electrifying Everything's Coming Up Roses (with full orchestra backing her) from Pre-Tonight Show Jimmy Fallon.
