Glad you liked it! As with most things talked about on this board, it's a matter of taste.
I do find the "type" that Joanne is singing about (which is herself, as well) may not exist much anymore, even in her natural habitat of the Upper East Side. As with a lot of the Furth books, it feels like it dated pretty quickly. I guess I was about 16 or 17 when I encountered the show for the first time in the early '80s and the world already seemed a thing of the past.
I'm sorry you haven't ever seen a Bobby who seemed to be learning something! I already mentioned Adrian Lester's deeply moving performance at the Donmar and I thought NPH was an absolutely beautiful Bobby: his natural glibness and bland handsomeness seemed ideal and I thought he acted it sublimely.
