| Last night I had the tremendous pleasure of being introduced to both Benjamin Britten's 1957 chamber opera and the wonderland of the Church of the Transfiguration on E. 29th St. The opera tells the story of Noah and his ark and is based on a English medieval mystery play. It was adapted by W. H. Auden and it delighted me, both musically and dramatically. The community surrounding the church seemed to be involved in the production. It was filled with kids wearing animal hats and some extremely talented young singers who performed with professional singers. One of the highlights for me was the percussion section which at one point started lightly banging on a row of hanging teacups. The opera and community were charming and uplifting yet the story and the music which reflects it also leave you with a sense of childlike awe at the catastrophes of existence. |
