I saw today’s matinee, liked it very much. It’s an homage to James Joyce’s The Dead—many references to characters and events in the novella, and the lightly falling snow was another echo. If you know the text or John Huston’s beautiful film, you will catch the references; I hesitate to give too much away.
The cast was great, especially Marylouise Burke, and the set was beautiful.
I agree that the religious meaning of Epiphany could have been explained in a program note, as it wouldn’t be apparent to anyone not raised in the Christian tradition. It’s a holiday, traditionally 12 days after Christmas (Jan. 6), that celebrates the visit of the three magi/kings to the baby Jesus.
