I saw this in London just a day or two after it opened and though I realize we may be in the minority, I was severely disappointed and very surprised by the good reviews the production received. The script seemed like nothing more than a Wikipedia entry on Robert Moses, and other than declaiming him a "bad" man, it offered very little insight into what made him tick. I found Ralph Fiennes' performance very old-fashioned and hammy, a lot of posturing and harrumphing around the stage with little humanity. I hope if the play transfers to NY, Fiennes will be replaced by an American actor. Siobhan Cullen, who played his assistant was fine but is truly saddled with playing "the girl" and just there to react to whatever Moses barks out without much of a mind of her own. As does the rather unnecessary other assistant played by Samuel Barnett. I wish the character of Jane Jacobs, as Moses' outspoken adversary, had more to do than some facile narration.

With all that, I love seeing shows at The Bridge. The flexible space is so beautifully designed, it can lift even a mediocre play like this into a unique theater-going event. Broadway desperately needs a comparable space to house new works that don't really fit well into proscenium houses (Circle-in-the-Square's claustrophobic subterranean oval is not the answer).
