You leave out an important distinction: Moses built the underpasses low in order to keep out poor people of color, which were also the people whose communities he destroyed in the South Bronx. And while the Sunrise Highway will get you near Jones Beach, it won't actually grant you beach access.
As for the play, it's a marvelous vehicle to communicate history, and Fiennes delivers a compelling performance, but it doesn't ultimately hang together as the character study Hare wants it to be. Jacobs provides some dramatic narration, but in a play that already has two other narrators, her presence is mainly to offer some dramatic hooks that give the evening a sense of drive rather than complicating or enhancing the core narrative. |
